The Smart Camp project has received the CETT Alimara award in the “Through Digitalization” category for its commitment to the digital transformation of the camping sector. The award was presented last night in Barcelona during the Nit dels Alimara.

The initiative is led by the Girona Campsite Association and seeks to transform the province into a smart tourism destination by leveraging technologies such as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence to enhance management, efficiency, and sustainability in campsites.

The jury highlighted that the project promotes a comprehensive sustainability model that goes beyond recycling, reinforcing environmental awareness among clients and raising industry standards. They also emphasized its clear commitment to innovation in a sector that has traditionally required modernization.

Campsites in Girona are immersed in a pioneering project to incorporate big data and artificial intelligence (AI), which will serve as a pilot test before expanding this model to similar accommodations throughout Catalonia.

    La Vanguardia – 23/03/2025

According to the Girona Campsite Association, which is promoting this initiative under the name Smartcamp, the aim is to develop a platform for the management and analysis of the data generated by the various establishments.

The objective is to improve management and competitiveness through digital technologies, advance service excellence, enhance the customer experience, and make progress in sustainability, water resource efficiency, and safety.

In the coming years, we will see the development of smart campsites that integrate advanced big data and artificial intelligence solutions across multiple areas: online bookings, security, energy efficiency, water consumption, and immersive customer experiences. For now, the Girona Campsite Association is spearheading the Smartcamp project, with the intention of expanding it across Catalonia starting in 2025.

The project will be officially presented at the next edition of Girocamping PRO, the professional congress on tourism and camping, to be held on Thursday, September 26, in Sant Pere Pescador.

According to the president of the Girona Campsite Association, Miquel Gotanegra, “digitalization is key to continuing to be leaders and benchmarks in innovation in Europe. This project will be a true revolution for the sector. With it, we are making these innovations accessible to all campsites, large and small.”

Girona campsites launch a pilot test to apply big data and artificial intelligence in their facilities

Girona’s campsites have launched the SmartCamp project, a pilot test that combines data from cameras and sensors with artificial intelligence. The goal is to make progress in sustainability, safety, and the customer experience.

Revista del Baix Empordà – 24/03/2025

Several campsites in the region are participating in this pilot, although not all will apply the same measures. Different sensors and cameras will collect data that will then be analyzed through a virtual AI-powered platform to improve campsite management. The resulting improvements will benefit both staff and guests — for example, by allowing real-time monitoring of swimming pool occupancy, issuing severe weather alerts, or notifying lifeguards of potential incidents.

The Girona Campsite Association is launching SmartCamp as a pilot project across multiple sites in the province. The president of the association, Miquel Gotanegra, emphasized that it is a “cross-cutting project” aimed at creating “a new product” — in this case, a protocol to define what a smart campsite is. To achieve this, the association analyzed the sector’s needs and then sought out technology partners to help bring the project to life.
“We’ve combined camping sector knowledge with technological expertise to create something new,” said Miquel Gotanegra.

The project will unfold over the coming months, and participating businesses have already begun installing some of the tech solutions needed to move the pilot forward. One example is Ballena Alegre campsite in Sant Pere Pescador, where a weather station has been installed and connected to the irrigation system. This setup ensures that if rain is forecast — or has just occurred — the irrigation system will not activate, thus saving water.

The Girona Campsite Association (ACG) is paving the way for the implementation of smartcamps in Catalonia. The provincial organization will invest €10 million to develop and pilot an intelligent management and data analysis platform that integrates advanced AI and big data solutions. The initiative is supported by a grant from SEGGITUR’s Última Milla funding program. WDNA and Deepsense are the project’s technology partners.

The president of the Girona association and the Catalan Campsite Federation (FCC), Miquel Gotanegra, stated that “digitalization is key to continuing to be leaders and references in innovation in Europe.”

The project goes beyond basic online booking management. It aims to integrate a wide range of technological solutions to monitor campsite operations. The goal is to address environmental and operational challenges, raise the level of commercial promotion, and focus on enhancing the user experience.
